The Black Chronicle offers endless educational lessons for a wide variety of student levels. Teachers can utilize the Teacher’s Guide created specifically for the publication, or can create their own lessons based upon their previously used curriculum. The Black Chronicle is designed to enhance the traditional text book,
to add enrichment and authentic ethnic and cultural reading material to the classroom. Articles are cleverly combined into newspaper issues and replicate the only media outlet of the time. The articles are represented by images, most hand drawn, which are authentic to the times as well.
The publication can be supplemented with a Teacher’s Guide, or manual, offering lesson plans for all ages. In addition, the Black Chronicle has been approved for Title 1 funding as a supplement to textbook education. The Teacher’s Guide also comes with a CD, allowing students the opportunity to listen to vignettes of speeches, debates, court battles, and much more.

Students will gain insight into the life of the African American throughout the 1700’s, 1800’s and the first half of the 1900’s.The perspective is from both the North and the South. Comparisons of artistic renditions of African Americans can be made based upon the opposing sides. Students will have the opportunity to compare the dueling sentiments, and to read the changing feelings towards African Americans throughout the years.
In addition, students will view everyday occurrences of the past based upon the actual participants of the times. Classifieds, obituaries, and advertisements line the newsprint pages. Students will gain historical information through the eyes of the actual observers. The alternative format of the Black Chronicle offers an educational advantage to many schools, classes, and students. The format is appealing for students, and allows them to “travel back in time” to an era that seems very distant, but in reality, is not so long ago.
The Black Chronicle spans a significant amount of time; therefore, multiple classes and levels can use the same publication. In addition, because the content is article based, the readings are short and concise, making it easy to read for any level.
