The concept of education in the correctional system revolves around the idea that all individuals, whether incarcerated or not, have the ability to and deserve the opportunity to learn. The purpose of education within the correctional system is to continually improve the inmate’s academic awareness and to develop a solid base for continued education once released. Educating incarcerated juvenile and adult offenders successfully contributes to the productivity of inmates once released.

Education within the correctional community provides the possibility to enhance skills and talents and to also introduce educational opportunities that can potentially lead to further education upon release. In summation, by educating inmates, we hope to produce productive members of society.

The Black Chronicle is an educational resource available to help develop the self esteem and ethnic validity for adults and juveniles incarcerated within the correctional community. The publication is written in short newspaper format, and it easy to read and comprehend. This is beneficial for the growing number of learning handicapped juveniles and adults incarcerated in the system today. A Teacher’s Guide can be purchased along with the publication, and offers audio samples for learners to listen to and enjoy.
